Vattenfall is Europe’s fifth largest electricity generator and the largest generator of heat and operates in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Poland, the Benelux countries as well as in the UK.  Our strategy is to reduce emissions from power generation and we have a road map for achieving climate neutrality by 2050.  Investment in wind power is an important cornerstone for delivering our road map.  We are building nine wind farms in six countries 2009-2011, both onshore and offshore, and will double our electricity generation from wind power by 2011.  Vattenfall Wind Power has approximately 270 employees around Europe.

In the UK, we own and operate the 300MW Thanet and 90MW Kentish Flats wind farms as well as the Edinbane wind farm and are part way through the construction of the 150MW Ormonde project, are planning an extension to our Kentish Flats wind farm and are involved in a proposed offshore wind demonstration centre in Aberdeen.  In joint venture with Scottish Power Renewables, we have been granted the rights to develop the Round 3 East Anglia Wind Farm with a potential up to 7,200GW of offshore wind capacity We are developing approximately ten onshore wind farms in Scotland.
 
We are now looking for a Grid Connection Manager to lead and manage the establishment of suitable grid connection arrangements for projects and to work with the procurement and construction teams to ensure that grid connections meet with relevant project and grid code requirements and regulations through the development, construction and commissioning of the project.

Summary of Responsibilities

The Grid Connection Manager will have overall responsibility for developing and delivering electrical engineering solutions from feasibility to detailed engineering designs for wind farms including collector system, collector substation and all other associated equipment.

Main responsibilities will include:
 
• Regular liaison with National Grid, Scottish Power, SSE and the regional network operators to ensure an overview of the current technical and regulatory issues and developments and opportunities for successful grid connection.
• Advice, discussion and management of grid connection feasibility work during the feasibility and development phase of projects.
• Assessing engineering documentation, feasibility and compliance with site specific requirements and support the preparation of accurate budgets for new projects.
• Responsibility for preparing appropriate engineering specifications for grid connection feasibility studies and grid connection applications
• Responsibility for providing technical and commercial assessment of tender submissions and reporting recommendations to the project team.
• Specify wind farm electrical equipment requirements for input to project technical specifications and tender processes.
• Provide grid advice during the development phase of onshore wind farms.
• Provide support and advice to the project development and construction team.
• Ensure that grid connection arrangements are delivered on time and within budget.
• Ensure that grid connection arrangements and construction specifications include high levels of Health and Safety Standards.

Main work tasks will include, but are not limited to:

• Input to electrical specification of wind farm grid connection arrangements.
• Negotiating agreements and contract terms with grid providers as suppliers and contractors.
• Manage financial, commercial and technical aspects of grid connections offers.
• Review and maintain grid connection offers for each onshore project.
• Minimise exposre and risk across all procurement, construction and commissioning of grid connection arrangements.
• Work with procurement and construction departments to ensure the appointment of appropriate contractors and suppliers to deliver cost effective grid connection arrangements in accordance with relevant grid codes policies.
• Use knowledge, experience and sound judgement to ensure the most cost effective and timely grid connection arrangements are secured, highlighting risks and long term use of systems issues where relevant and escalating decisions as required.


Qualifications and Skills

The Grid Connection Manager would ideally have the following skills, qualifications and experience:

• Over 5 years experience in the grid industry
• Knowledge of one of the following areas at voltages of 33kV, 132kV and 275kV is essential:
         o Underground and Insulated cables and accessories
         o Swithgear
         o Transformers
         o Distribution system design
         o Protection
         o Substation and network control
         o Automation
         o Telecommunication
         o Metering
• Knowledge about specific grid connection contract types
• Ability to meet deadlines and strong leadership skills
• Experience in running large scale (preferably global) projects
• Experience of negotiating and managing grid connection agreements
• Knowledge of connection charging arrangements
• Knowledge of grid code
• Knowledge of distribution code
• High degree of flexibility, self motivation and an innovative approach
• Knowledge and understanding of negotiation principles and technique as well as contractual skills
• Good understanding of health and safety requirements
• Demonstrable communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to function well in a team environment and interface with a broad range of departments and work groups
• Ability to develop strategic relationships with grid connection providers
• Demonstrate and succeed in conflict, challenge, team and risk management.
• Knowledge and experience of large scale engineering contracts
• Experience in wind/renewable energy would be beneficial
